Colorado Springs firefighters have turned to the public for help after the Fallen Firefighter Memorial at Memorial Park became the target of repeated disturbances. The International Association of Firefighters Local 5 reported that the site has been defaced with graffiti and that people have been camping on the grounds and leaving trash.

Local 5 called the memorial "hallowed ground" and "a sacred place where we honor the lives and sacrifices of firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities." The union's public appeal signals growing concern that continued disturbances are eroding the site's dignity.

Beyond graffiti and trash, firefighters say people camping at the site have also left drug paraphernalia behind. The breadth of the problem has led the union to seek wider community involvement in keeping watch over the grounds.

Local 5 is asking anyone who visits or passes near the memorial to monitor activity there and to report vandalism, damage, or disrespectful behavior. The union offered residents specific direction depending on the nature of what they observe. For situations involving encampments or activity tied to homelessness, the union directed people to reach the Colorado Springs Police Department's Homeless Outreach Team by phone at (719) 444-7666. Vandalism occurring in the moment, or any other urgent emergency, should be reported by dialing 911.

Local 5 stated that the memorial "belongs to the families of our fallen brothers and sisters, the fire service, and our entire community," and said that acting together can keep the site one of honor and remembrance. The union added, "Their sacrifice deserves our respect. Their memorial deserves our protection."

Whether city officials or law enforcement plan additional measures to secure the memorial grounds has not yet been announced.
