A long-dormant Colorado Springs tradition came back to life recently when the Venetian Village yard sale returned to the Papeton area after going dark for six years. The event had been a fixture in the Papeton and Venetian Village neighborhoods before its extended pause. Those behind the revival were clear that bargain-hunting was secondary to the real goal: getting neighbors back in conversation with one another.
Thirteen homes joined the effort this year, though the organizer leading the charge said the comeback is only beginning. A board member of the Papeton Neighborhood Organization described the sale as "a really great way not only to just meet your neighbors but to also engage them and get them involved in the Papeton neighborhood."
The event was once considerably bigger. A former organizer recalled that roughly a quarter of the neighborhood's 300 homes once had residents selling goods outside, with two or three local churches also taking part. She described shoppers who cleared their work schedules or drove in from other states to walk the sale. The current organizer said residents "were really happy to see the pink signs up all over town again" given the event's past reputation as one of the area's biggest sales.
The six-year absence registered clearly among those who lived through it. Turnover in the neighborhood means a wave of newer residents arrived during the years the sale was dormant, leaving fewer chances for introductions across property lines. One neighbor put it plainly: "It's hard to meet people when you're cooped up in your house all year long and this garage sale is definitely a big thing for our community here." Another resident said the exchanges that took place at his home were the real draw, recounting a visitor who spent close to 20 minutes chatting — ultimately about a hornet problem — and calling the whole experience "just fun meeting people and getting together with people."
Beyond reconnecting neighbors, the sale carried an organizational purpose. It served to build visibility for the Papeton Neighborhood Organization, which passed its one-year mark in May. The group said it has already been working on behalf of local green spaces, including Flanagan Park and Portal Park. Other recent activities include Halloween programming, a standing monthly gathering at Storybook Brewing, and a neighborhood lunch being planned for September.
A former organizer said she hopes the renewed event can restore a sense of closeness that has slipped away, saying, "I miss the community that this neighborhood used to be and I really hope this helps bring it back together."
Whether future editions of the sale can grow participation back toward the historic peak of roughly 75 households will be the measure of whether the revival takes lasting hold.
