A major wildfire in Southern Colorado continued to test firefighters Thursday as crews worked to hold containment lines against a blaze that has now consumed well over 100,000 acres.

The Aspen Acres Fire had burned 101,921 acres in Southern Colorado as of Thursday, July 30. Containment stood at 66%, according to the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3 (CIMT3), with 699 personnel actively battling the fire.

Afternoon conditions on Thursday brought a chance for rain and thunderstorms — weather that can both aid and complicate wildfire suppression, as lightning from dry or scattered storms can spark new ignitions even as precipitation helps wet down active fire areas.

The fire's management remains under the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3, indicating a multi-agency response coordinating the hundreds of personnel on the ground. With more than a third of the fire's perimeter still uncontained, efforts to achieve full containment are ongoing.
