Two street segments in Fountain face closures this week as crews work to install a new wastewater line through a busy corridor of the city.

The first closure began Monday on Mesa Road between Fountain Mesa Road and Healy Drive. A partial closure of Cross Creek Avenue, east of Fountain Mesa, started Wednesday.

The closures are scheduled to last two weeks so that the Widefield Water and Sanitation District can install a new wastewater line from the district's property on Highway 85/87 to a location east of Fountain. The route takes the line through a busy part of town behind the new King Soopers shopping center and across busy Fountain Mesa.

The project is not without a local benefit. Because part of the installation runs along Cross Creek Avenue — where pavement is in poor condition and Fountain has not had the budget to repave it — Widefield and Fountain will split the repaving cost, improving the street sooner than it otherwise would have been.

Fountain officials hope for more similar partnerships in the future, as the city's paving needs far exceed available funding.

The exact cost of the Cross Creek repaving work has not yet been confirmed publicly, and the full scope of the expense remains to be reported.
