The Colorado Rapids announced Wednesday that the club has agreed to transfer defender Lucas Herrington to English Premier League side Hull City in what the club described as a record-setting deal. The Rapids said the club has agreed to transfer Herrington, 18, to Hull City for a record fee, one that also marks the highest ever paid for an MLS defender.

Financial terms were not immediately disclosed, though media reports said Wednesday the transfer fee was $17 million, with incentives potentially taking it up to $23 million.

Herrington, who played for Australia in the recent World Cup, joined the Rapids at the start of the 2026 season and appeared in all 18 of the club's matches, starting all but one. He became the fourth-youngest player to start in the MLS All-Star Game. He was also the youngest active MLS player to play in a FIFA World Cup match.

"Lucas is a special talent whose elite mentality and character match his outstanding ability on the field," Colorado Rapids President Pádraig Smith said in a news release. "We are incredibly proud of everything he accomplished during his time with the Rapids and excited for him as he takes this next step in his career. Identifying, recruiting, and developing the best young talent, locally, nationally and internationally, is a key part of our club strategy. Our ambition is to help them make an impact and win here in MLS, while creating an environment in which they can reach their full potential. Lucas is a wonderful example of that approach, and we wish him every success at Hull City."

Herrington also spoke to his rapid rise after arriving in the United States earlier this year. "When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream," he said. "The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one."

Herrington is the sixth Rapids player in the past six seasons to transfer to a European club. The official completion of the transfer and Herrington's expected start date with Hull City had not been announced as of Wednesday.
