Colorado Springs' animal shelter on Abbot Lane is currently highlighting three dogs in need of permanent homes. Among them is Barry, a young Staffordshire terrier mix with a fawn and white coat, alongside Easly, a decade-old Chihuahua mix, and Lou Boy, a four-year-old pit bull mix — all owner surrenders now in the care of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
Barry's adoption cost has been eliminated for the current weekend through the support of Hill's Pet Nutrition, though licensing fees may still be owed. Anyone who adopts him will receive vaccinations, a voucher for a veterinary exam, and a microchip, and he has already been neutered. Barry walks well on a leash and is treat-motivated. He has shared a home with other dogs before, but his strong prey drive makes a household free of cats and small animals the better fit. He gets along with children, though he tends to jump, which may suit older kids better; sudden noises and unfamiliar surroundings can unsettle him, but he relaxes once he adjusts and is just as happy winding down as he is playing hard.
Lou Boy's adoption fee is set at $200, which covers a veterinary exam voucher, vaccinations, a microchip, and his neuter procedure. He is enthusiastic about toys and thrives on human attention, though he tends to get overeager around treats. Because his background with other dogs, cats, and children is not documented, the shelter strongly recommends gradual introductions, noting he can be assertive around other dogs.
Easly presents a quieter option for households looking for a lower-energy companion. The senior dog is both potty and crate trained and has previously lived alongside larger dogs and livestock. He has not been around children and can be overwhelmed by high-energy dogs, making a calm, relaxed environment the right match for him.
Interested adopters can browse all available animals at hsppr.org or stop by 610 Abbot Lane in Colorado Springs, where the shelter is open for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.
Whether Barry is adopted before the fee-waiver period closes, and whether Lou Boy and Easly find placements this week, are questions the shelter has yet to answer.
