The City of Fountain recorded its highest-ever single-day electricity demand last month, prompting officials to remind residents of financial assistance options ahead of what are typically the most expensive months for utility bills.
On July 28, the city set a new record for a single day of electric use at 69.6 megawatts. The spike was not isolated to one day. Throughout the entire month of July, electricity usage was 11% higher than in July 2025.
Water consumption also climbed sharply over the same period. July 2026 marked a 19% increase in water usage compared to 2025. Together, the figures point to a summer of unusually high demand on the city's utility systems.
Ahead of more costly bills, which the city says are often between July and September, there are multiple programs residents would be aware of. City officials publicized two primary assistance options in a news release. The Lighten the Load program offers residents up to $750 in any 12 months with the assistance of the Salvation Army; residents can call 719-382-1182 for more information. Energy Outreach Colorado offers up to $1,000 per fiscal year to eligible residents.
For those who do not qualify for either program, the city is not leaving them without recourse. Anyone who does not qualify but is still struggling is encouraged to reach out to Fountain Utilities to try to make arrangements with the city to avoid disconnection. The Fountain Utilities Customer Service department can be reached at 719-322-2010 or by email.
It remains to be seen whether demand will continue at record levels through the remainder of the summer peak season, and whether current assistance program funding will be sufficient to meet increased resident need.
