Fort Carson has notified El Paso County residents that heightened noise and dust are expected this week as the installation carries out a round of field artillery exercises. The unit involved is the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, part of the 4th Infantry Division, and the drills are set to run intermittently from Aug. 21 through Aug. 28 across southern and southwestern sections of the installation.

People living to the south of the main post are the most likely to notice the disruption, which could occur at any hour — during daytime as well as overnight. The installation offered the advance notice so that nearby communities would not be caught off guard by the activity.

A Fort Carson spokesperson described the drills as a standard element of the 4th Infantry Division's training cycle, explaining that the exercises are necessary to certify artillery crews. The effort reflects routine readiness requirements rather than any extraordinary operational circumstance.

Residents who wish to report noise concerns can reach the Fort Carson Public Affairs Office by phone at (719) 526-9849.

It remains to be seen whether the installation will announce any follow-on training periods once the current exercise window closes at the end of the month.
