Colorado's Division of Motor Vehicles has issued a public warning about a sharp increase in document fraud connected to vehicle titling and registration across the state. The agency's Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit, known as the MVIU, says fraudulent identification and "gray market" papers are turning up more frequently in title and registration transactions.
Among the specific documents being counterfeited are Colorado driver's licenses, state-issued IDs, and records intended to establish proof of address. Investigators assigned to the unit receive specialized training in authenticating official documents.
People who use such paperwork — whether knowingly or not — can face a range of serious consequences. On the practical side, vehicle owners could see their car lose resale value, have insurance claims denied, or face impoundment of the vehicle. Beyond those losses, authorities caution that submitting falsified documents can expose someone to felony forgery prosecution and a lasting criminal record.
Document fraud is not the only threat the DMV highlighted. Text message scams — in which individuals falsely claim a recipient has unpaid tickets or a suspended license — are also on the rise, according to the agency. The DMV released both warnings together as part of its broader Summer Safety campaign.
