Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix heads into the 2026 NFL season under financial and competitive circumstances unlike any quarterback in franchise history, according to a Colorado Springs Gazette column published this week.
At his current salary-cap hit of $5 million, Nix ranks as a bargain by the standards of a sport in which San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy received an average salary of $53 million when the 49ers gave him a new contract in 2025. Nix is eligible to renegotiate his rookie deal after this season.
The contract stakes dwarf what previous Broncos quarterbacks earned. John Elway is forever the favorite son of Denver sports fans, but he never earned more than $10 million for his football work, when his annual salary peaked in 1993. The monetary reward for Peyton Manning's final season, after winning Super Bowl 50, was $19 million with incentives. By contrast, Nix's next contract would conservatively be estimated at $50 million per year, according to the column.
If Denver ownership chooses to renegotiate his rookie contract, Nix could earn more money during the calendar year of 2027 than Elway was paid by the Broncos for the entirety of his 16-season NFL career.
Nix addressed the pressure of a contract year directly during a recent practice session. "You can't ever let up and think: 'You know what, I've made it. I've gotten to where I need to be.' Quite honestly, you never feel that way. There's always the next season, the next championship to go after," Nix said. "I think every year, for every player, feels like a contract year. It should, because you've got to go out there, day by day and continue to earn it," he added.
Nix appears healthy and ready to play after two surgeries to repair a broken ankle that caused the Broncos to exit their Super Bowl run in the AFC Championship Game. Only two years ago, Nix was a calculated risk selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 draft. He reflected on his growth in the organization, saying: "Year 1, you're just trying not to mess up. I feel like Year 3, I'm trying to make plays for the team."
The Broncos are also operating out of new surroundings. The team's new world headquarters is a 240,000-square-foot facility whose training areas, locker room, and executive offices include amenities such as a golf simulator and a large spa. The price tag for the new facility is $175 million.
Whether Nix's on-field performance this season will lead to a long-term contract extension with co-owners Carrie Walton and Greg Penner remains to be seen as the 2026 campaign unfolds.
