No Broncos quarterback has ever faced a season quite like the one Bo Nix is about to play, with a contract renegotiation of historic proportions potentially awaiting him when it ends, according to Colorado Springs Gazette coverage published this week.
Denver's Super Bowl window is open in part because Nix remains on his rookie deal, carrying a salary-cap figure of roughly $5 million — a fraction of what San Francisco's Brock Purdy commands after signing a new deal averaging $53 million per season in 2025. Nix becomes eligible to seek a new contract once the current season concludes.
The numbers involved put franchise history in sharp relief. Elway remains the sentimental favorite among Denver's faithful, yet his salary never topped $10 million in any single year, reaching that ceiling back in 1993. Manning's final season payout, capping a run that ended with a Super Bowl 50 victory, came to $19 million including incentives. Nix, by contrast, is playing toward a deal that observers conservatively peg at $50 million a year. The gap is so vast that what Nix might collect in 2027 alone could exceed every dollar Elway earned across his entire 16-year career in Denver.
Nix spoke about staying focused during a recent practice, offering his own take on the pressure. "You can't ever let up and think: 'You know what, I've made it. I've gotten to where I need to be.' Quite honestly, you never feel that way. There's always the next season, the next championship to go after," he said. He added: "I think every year, for every player, feels like a contract year. It should, because you've got to go out there, day by day and continue to earn it."
Nix enters the season having come through two ankle surgeries that cut short Denver's playoff run in the AFC Championship Game. His selection with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 draft carried real uncertainty at the time. Now in his third year, he reflected on how his mindset has shifted: "Year 1, you're just trying not to mess up. I feel like Year 3, I'm trying to make plays for the team."
The Broncos are also operating out of a brand-new home base. The facility spans 240,000 square feet and features amenities ranging from a golf simulator to a spa large enough to impress even the most discerning guest, all finished in orange and blue throughout. The total cost of the complex came to $175 million.
Co-owners Carrie Walton and Greg Penner will face an even steeper bill when the time comes to lock Nix in as the long-term face of the franchise. How Nix performs across the coming months will determine the terms of that conversation.
