Labor Day Lift Off is Colorado Springs' most photogenic event: dozens of hot-air balloons launching at dawn over Memorial Park and Prospect Lake across Labor Day weekend, many of them dipping to skim the water on their way out.
It's free, it's enormous, and it runs on balloon logic — which means everything good happens at sunrise and everything depends on the wind.
Mass ascensions happen shortly after sunrise each morning of the weekend. That means arriving in the dark to see the best of it — the balloons inflating on the field is half the show. By mid-morning it's over; there is no late showing.
The classic shot is from the east side of Prospect Lake, catching the balloons and their reflections as they skim the water. The field itself puts you inside the inflation chaos, which kids tend to prefer. Either way, in-park parking pressure is intense — walking or biking the last stretch beats circling.
Evening balloon glows — tethered balloons lighting up after dusk — typically round out the schedule, and they're the low-commitment alternative to the dawn run. The same weekend, Manitou Springs hosts its long-running Commonwheel Arts Festival, a natural double-header.
