Mueller State Park is entering its peak season, and land managers are asking visitors to plan trips carefully to avoid congestion on trails and in parking areas.

As the days grow shorter and aspen leaves shift from green to gold, the park fills with visitors seeking fall foliage views. Weekend campsite openings are described as "slim to none," a pattern that holds each year from September through early October.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is recommending that visitors come on weekdays if possible, or arrive early on weekends to improve their chances of securing a parking spot at their preferred trailhead. Officials are also reminding the public to park only in designated spots to keep the season safe.

This year's foliage display may look somewhat different from past seasons, owing to dry conditions across the region. Due to a lack of water, park staff say the leaf color could peak earlier than usual and may not last as long. Because aspens have shallow roots, they are more susceptible to heat stress, which can cause them to drop leaves ahead of schedule. As with the weather itself, precisely how and when the leaves will change remains difficult to predict.

Regardless of aspen conditions, visitors will have a range of activities available, including miles of hiking trails and park programs such as guided hikes, children's programs, and art classes. A history program scheduled for Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the park amphitheater will cover the fur trade boom that took place in Colorado during the 1800s, with an indoor backup location in the camper services building if weather is unpleasant.

Biking programming is also expanding this month. Two beginner bike skill classes are planned — one for e-bikes on Sept. 9 and one for mountain bikes on Sept. 13 — along with a group fall ride scheduled near the end of the month. Registration is required for all biking events.

Not all programs require advance registration, and those that do are clearly marked on the website. Park officials have not yet confirmed the precise date of peak color, and visitors should monitor conditions through the Visitor Center as the season progresses.
