A German company operating out of Colorado is putting satellites to work against wildfires in the mountain West, partnering with local fire agencies to deliver the kind of real-time aerial intelligence that conventional cameras and government satellites have struggled to provide.
Ororatech, founded in Germany in 2018 by engineer and volunteer firefighter Thomas Gruebler, provides satellite imagery to fire departments during active fire periods in the afternoons. It also combines that data with information from existing sensors to build simulations of fire behavior.
The company is working with the Aspen Fire Protection District to monitor Lincoln Creek Valley — a remote area popular for summer recreation whose rugged landscape and dense canopy make detecting wildfires with traditional monitoring tools difficult. The Aspen Fire Protection District already operates a network of cameras, but they don't cover everything; adding Earth observation services from Ororatech helps firefighters more quickly identify and respond to fires, better protecting Aspen residents and visitors, said Fire Chief Jake Anderson.
In Colorado, Ororatech is working alongside Aspen's existing Pano AI cameras — a network watching for smoke plumes or flame near the famed ski villages, with each camera giving first responders a 360-degree live view of several points near Aspen, Snowmass Village, Basalt and Carbondale. But cameras are not foolproof and can be blinded by smoke as fires grow, meaning satellite-based monitoring allows firefighters to see fires even when cameras cannot, Anderson said.
The satellite layer also extends situational awareness well beyond a single agency's boundaries. The broader view allows Aspen Fire Protection District firefighters to watch surrounding public lands — some outside their jurisdiction — giving them what a news release described as "broader situational awareness." "Wildfire doesn't recognize jurisdictional boundaries," a retired paramedic firefighter said in that release. "Preventing catastrophic wildfire takes collaboration, innovation and a willingness to invest in the future."
A key selling point is timing. Existing satellite constellations from NASA, the European Space Agency and the Japanese Space Agency only provide morning updates, leaving an afternoon gap that Ororatech specifically targets — able to provide updates as frequently as every hour. Fires are typically more active in the afternoon, when high temperatures, low humidity and afternoon storms combine — conditions that proved significant during the Aspen Acres fire. Firefighters battling that blaze, described as the state's largest in the 2026 fire season, frequently dealt with afternoon storms producing high winds and encouraging the fire's spread, at times grounding air attack aircraft used to survey the perimeter. Satellites orbit far above the weather responsible for grounding aircraft; Ororatech operates 19 satellites in its constellation.
The technology has already proven itself in the field. In California, Ororatech detected the first ignition of the Rock fire, with no ground cameras recording the fire's start; for the first two hours, only Ororatech's constellation provided firefighters with a fire perimeter, "delivering key information for strategy and resource prioritization," according to the company. That fire burned just over 12,000 acres and is now fully contained, according to CalFire.
The broader market context is favorable. Earth observation is a growing business sector, according to the Colorado Springs-based Space Foundation, whose latest analysis found the segment — including direct imaging and downstream products such as analysis and decision-support services — generated $4.3 billion in commercial revenue. The foundation's report noted that "the continued deployment of large Earth observation constellations is expected to further transform the market."
Ororatech has said it aims eventually to detect any fire within 15 minutes; whether the Aspen Fire Protection District will expand the partnership beyond the current Lincoln Creek Valley pilot remains to be seen.
