Button batteries — the small, flat, disc-shaped batteries used in many light-up toys, key fobs, and similar items — are one of the most serious hazards in pediatric emergency medicine. If swallowed, a button battery can lodge in a child's esophagus and begin generating an electrical current. That current can cause severe internal chemical burns within two hours. Children have died from swallowing button batteries that went undetected.

Stop using these toys immediately. Contact the seller for a refund. If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery, seek emergency medical attention immediately — do not wait for symptoms.
