D11 Is Offering Free Reading Support for Kindergarteners During Fall Break
Colorado Springs School District 11's fall break starts Monday, October 19, and this year the district is offering something new for families who want it: a free, voluntary three-day literacy program for kindergarteners who could use extra reading support.
The Gazette reported the program this weekend, describing it as aimed at kindergarteners who could benefit from a little extra help. It's not required, and there's no shame attached to signing up โ it's designed as a light-touch reading boost during a week when school's out. D11 families who are interested should contact their child's school directly to find out timing and enrollment details.

D11's one-week fall break runs October 19 through October 23. Parent-teacher conferences were held October 16, the Friday before break begins.
D49 families are already midway through a two-week fall break that began October 13 and runs through October 23. The extended break is part of D49's calendar design โ the tradeoff is a slightly longer school year overall, which the community has generally supported.
Academy District 20 took a different approach, scheduling an "end of quarter break" directly following its parent-teacher conferences on October 13 and 14. D20 families are already back in school.
The Thinking Behind Fall Breaks
COS isn't alone in expanding fall break. School districts across Colorado have been adding mid-fall pauses to give students, families, and staff a recharge before the holiday push in November and December. The Gazette noted this weekend that Colorado Springs' approach has been broadly welcomed โ the consensus is that the schedule is working and should stay in place.
There's also a practical argument for the literacy program D11 is piloting this year. Reading skills at the kindergarten level matter enormously for long-term learning outcomes, and fall break represents a natural opportunity to reach kids who need a little extra time without the pressure of a full school day. Keeping it voluntary lowers the barrier for families who want help without making it feel like a consequence.
What's Next
D11 and D49 families have fall break October 19-23. If you have a kindergartener in D11 and want to find out whether the literacy program is a fit, reach out to your school on Monday. The program runs for three days, and spots may be limited depending on the school. D49 break wraps up October 23, and students across most COS districts are back in classrooms on Monday, October 26.
