An electrical failure at a substation in El Paso County left thousands of residents without air conditioning during a hot Saturday afternoon, according to Mountain View Electric Association.

Nearly 4,000 people lost power, with the Mountain View Electric Association alerting customers to the outage before 1:30 p.m. Saturday. A spokesperson told KRDO13 News that the electrical failure not only caused the outage but also sparked a small grass fire.

The Cimarron Hills and Falcon fire departments responded to the grass fire near Highway 24 and Garrett Road Saturday afternoon. The fire was quickly put out and did not spread far.

Power was restored several hours later on Saturday. Mountain View Electric Association has not publicly disclosed the specific cause of the substation failure or whether any equipment sustained lasting damage.

The root cause of the electrical failure and any plans for infrastructure review by Mountain View Electric Association remain outstanding.
