Sand Creek High School's football team will give up a pair of wins this season after school staff discovered and disclosed a player eligibility problem to state athletic authorities. Staff became aware of the issue on a Wednesday and brought it to the Colorado High School Activities Association the following day.
By the next morning, the consequences were clear. The Scorpions were told they must surrender their victory from Aug. 28 over Highlands Ranch as well as their Sept. 11 triumph over Longmont, with both results now recorded as wins for the opposing schools.
The affected player's participation was limited. The individual was kept out of the most recent contest against Rampart, a game Sand Creek took 20-3 — a result that now stands as the program's only credited win of the year. That outcome drops the Scorpions to a 1-3 record on the season.
State officials acknowledged the matter publicly but stopped short of elaborating. In a statement issued Monday, CHSAA said it had been "working directly with our member school to address the matter in accordance with standard organizational procedures" and declined to comment further, citing the integrity of the process.
The penalty arrives at a moment when the Scorpions had been gaining recognition in state rankings. Prior to the forfeits taking effect, Sand Creek sat 47th overall in MaxPreps' statewide standings and held seventh place among Class 4A programs in the CHSAA polls released that same Monday. Both standings are likely to shift as the forfeited results are absorbed.
Sand Creek is scheduled to travel to face Lutheran on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. with its revised record in hand.
Whether CHSAA's review of the situation is fully closed or whether additional consequences may follow has not yet been confirmed.
