The Colorado Rockies were beaten 8-1 by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep that extended Detroit's winning streak to four games.
Colorado matched its longest losing streak of the season at seven games, finishing a winless six-game road trip and dropping to 5-20 since Aug. 16. The Rockies, now 50-94 on the season, have lost 94 or more games in five consecutive seasons.
Detroit starter Jackson Jobe struck out eight — a career high — over 6 1/3 innings, pitching into the seventh inning for the first time in his career. Jobe generated 16 swings and misses, allowed only Adael Amador's first-inning home run and two additional hits, and walked one batter. The 24-year-old right-hander has given up two runs or fewer in five of his seven starts since returning from Tommy John surgery in August.
Colorado starter Gabriel Hughes, who fell to 0-8, allowed five runs and five hits across just two innings, including a two-run homer to Detroit's Riley Greene — who reached 20 home runs for the third straight season. Detroit pushed its lead to 5-1 in the second inning on an RBI single by John Peck and a two-run triple by Kevin McGonigle, a 397-foot drive that would have cleared the fence in 24 of the 30 major league ballparks. Spencer Torkelson added a solo home run in the fifth inning off Nick Frasso.
The Rockies return to action Monday night when right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano, who carries a 12-9 record and a 5.30 ERA, is scheduled to start against San Diego. Whether Colorado can halt its seven-game skid against the Padres remains to be seen.
