A Colorado Springs community college claimed one of higher education's most exclusive distinctions this year. Insight Into Academia magazine selected Pikes Peak State College for its 2026 Higher Education Excellence and Distinction Award Champion title, a designation shared with just one other institution across the entire country.
The Champion category represents a step above the standard annual HEED Award, a program that recognizes U.S. colleges and universities for their work toward academic quality, campus belonging, and community development. Landing in that top tier places PPSC in exceptionally rare company among the many institutions eligible for the recognition each year.
The magazine's co-publisher, Lenore Pearlstein, outlined what the selection process involves. Reviewers combine a detailed scoring methodology with a qualitative, whole-picture assessment of each application, she said, holding candidates to demanding standards and looking for campuses where excellence and belonging function as genuine daily priorities rather than stated aspirations.
PPSC described the distinction as a reflection of sustained, college-wide work aimed at converting enrollment access into actual student achievement, targeting the academic, financial, and personal challenges that can push students off course before they reach their goals. Those efforts, the college said, are woven into a broader strategy that touches academic programs, student support services, hiring decisions, staff development, and long-range institutional planning.
College President Dr. Lance Bolton credited the everyday dedication of faculty and staff as the force behind the award. "Putting students first isn't just something we say; it's how we show up for every student, every day," Bolton said, describing the Champion distinction as "a powerful recognition of that commitment and of the PPSC faculty and staff who bring it to life."
No information has been released regarding a formal campus event or public ceremony tied to the recognition.
