A country singer from Penrose turned the fear and relief of watching a neighboring mountain town battle disaster into an original song, which is scheduled to make its public debut at a local fundraiser this weekend.
Loggins, who is based in Penrose, observed the blaze from home as fire consumed the area around Beulah. He initially told his wife he believed the town was lost — only to see a small, unburned patch emerge amid the fire mapping, holding out against the surrounding destruction.
"Beulah's strong," Loggins said. Unable to contribute on the fire lines, he turned to songwriting as his way of responding to the crisis. Within two days, he had completed the lyrics for a track he titled "Beulah Strong."
Over the following month, Loggins refined the song's vocal approach and guitar arrangements, with this Saturday set to be the first occasion he brings it to a live audience. He and his son Jake will perform the song together at the "Cañon City Loves" event, held at the Loves Truck Stop in Cañon City, with the Children's Miracle Network designated as the beneficiary. Loggins said he will take the stage without pay and direct any tips he receives to the network.
No announcement has been made regarding a formal recording or broader distribution of the song following Saturday's performance.
