A long-running footrace in Beulah is back on after organizers briefly halted registration following a local wildfire, and this year's event will carry an added purpose: helping the community rebuild.

Registration for the Beulah Challenge was temporarily paused when the Aspen Acres fire first broke out, due to concerns about potentially having to cancel the race, organizers said. The race will continue in September in a slightly different format — organizers decided to cancel the half-marathon due to safety concerns but will proceed with the 5K and 10K distances.

The Beulah Challenge has been held since 1996 and raises money for the Beulah Educational Support Team, known as the BEST program, at the Beulah School for Natural Sciences. Organizers say the funds support programs focused on outdoor learning and science education.

This year, organizers say a portion of the race proceeds will go toward supporting recovery and restoration projects within Beulah. The dual mission gives participants a direct way to contribute to a community still working through the aftermath of the Aspen Acres fire.

The race is scheduled for September 19, with the 10K starting at 9 a.m. and the 5K starting shortly after. Registration is open and available on the challenge's website.
