A series of jarring noises rattled neighborhoods near Monument on Thursday and at other points during the week, drawing worried calls and messages to local news outlets. The disturbance originated from cadet basic training being conducted at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Several residents contacted KOAA News5 on Thursday morning to report the sounds, among them a woman who counted roughly 40 distinct booming sounds coming from outside her home.
Academy officials confirmed that the noise was connected to training activity taking place at Jacks Valley. Academy spokesperson Tony Mayne subsequently informed News5 that the training exercise had concluded.
No additional details about the length or nature of the training activity were disclosed publicly. Whether the Academy intends to notify surrounding communities before future exercises of this kind remains an open question.
