Residents in the Monument area were startled by a series of loud noises earlier this week, prompting concern and calls to local media. Those who heard the sounds — described as gunfire and explosions — can rest easy: the noises came from cadet basic training at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Multiple people reached out to News5 Thursday morning concerned about the noises, including one woman who said she heard what sounded like 40 loud "booms" in her typically quiet neighborhood.
Leaders at the Academy confirmed the sounds were part of training at Jacks Valley. Academy Spokesperson Tony Mayne told News5 the training has ended.
No further details about the scope or duration of the training exercise were made available. It is not yet known whether the Academy plans to issue advance public notice before future training exercises that produce similar noise levels in surrounding communities.
