The 18-mile stretch of I-25 between Monument and Castle Rock (the "Gap") was the state's most dangerous highway segment until CDOT's 2018-2022 widening project added a third lane each direction, smart-lane technology, wildlife crossings, and shoulder improvements. Post-completion, accident rates dropped and travel times improved, but wildlife-collision data and congestion during peak events (Broncos games, ski season) are still being evaluated.
