This is the weekend's standout pick, and the price tag is hard to argue with: free.
Bear Creek Nature Center — Colorado's first nature center, established in 1976 — turns 50 this Saturday, and El Paso County Parks is throwing a full celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 245 Bear Creek Road. Here's what's on the schedule:
- Living History Hikes at 10:30, 10:45, 11:00, and 11:15 a.m. — these require pre-registration, so grab your slot now at elpasoco.com/bcnc50
- Book readings by author Nancy Bentley at 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
- Insect sweeps at 1:00, 1:15, and 1:30 p.m. — perfect for the kid who is deeply into bugs
- Art projects, educational exhibits, and community partner booths throughout
- A food truck on site
- Ribbon-cutting for the new "Life in the Shadows" exhibit
This one works across ages — bring the whole crew. Best for families with kids 4 and up, though the toddler set will enjoy the hike and outdoor setting too.
No tickets needed. Just show up — and register for the hike online if you want it.
2. COS Comic Con — Friday Through Sunday
Colorado Springs Comic Con runs Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23 at Broadmoor World Arena, 3185 Venetucci Blvd. Doors open Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday–Sunday at 10 a.m. This one's better for families with older kids and teens — think 10 and up — who are into comics, pop culture, cosplay, or gaming. Check broadmoorworldarena.com for current ticket pricing and the full schedule of panels and appearances.
3. SISFA Film Festival — Friday and Saturday Evenings
The SISFA Film Festival runs Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Louisa Performing Arts Center, 21 Broadmoor Ave. Tickets run $15–$36 per person. This is more of an adult evening event — a good option if you've got a babysitter lined up and want a night out with something interesting on screen. Teens interested in film would likely enjoy it too.
