Advertise hereThis Weekend: Labor Day Lift Off
Before fall even gets going, the Labor Day Lift Off runs September 5-7 at Memorial Park — free, with 65 hot air balloons launching at 7 AM each morning and evening balloon glows Saturday and Sunday nights. We covered the full guide in today's other articles, but if you haven't locked in your plans yet, Saturday morning is the one to catch.
Late September: Gather Mountain Blooms and Aspen Season
September 26 brings Gather Mountain Blooms, a celebration of end-of-summer with flowers, music, food vendors, and the first pumpkins of the season. It's a transitional event that marks the shift from summer outdoor activities to fall harvest season — a good low-key family outing.
Also in late September, the aspens start turning gold in the high country around COS. Rampart Range Road, the drive up to Woodland Park, and the trails above Cripple Creek all offer spectacular fall color in the last two weeks of September and first two weeks of October. For families who've never done a fall leaf drive, this is the region to do it in — the combination of aspen gold and Pikes Peak as a backdrop is hard to beat.
The Barr Trail up the lower section of Pikes Peak is also beautiful in fall and manageable with older kids. The Gateway at the Summit of Pikes Peak opens at 5 AM on September 26 for a sunrise experience — worth the early morning if your family is up for it.
October: Rock Ledge Ranch and the Penrose Apple Festival
Rock Ledge Ranch, tucked into the western edge of Colorado Springs near Garden of the Gods, runs fall seasonal programming in October. Expect wagon rides, old-time music, pumpkin picking, tours of the historic buildings, and demonstrations at the blacksmith shop. It's one of those COS gems that locals either love and make annual or have somehow never discovered. Check rockledgeranch.com for specific October dates and hours.
On October 7, the Penrose Apple Festival runs from 7 AM to about 9:30 PM in Penrose, Colorado — roughly 45 minutes south of Colorado Springs. The festival starts with a pancake breakfast and closes with fireworks, with a full day of parade, live music, food trucks, vendors, and an apple pie eating contest in between. It's a long day if you go end-to-end, but the parade and afternoon portions are very manageable with kids of most ages.
What's Next
Fall in COS is genuinely one of the better seasons for family activities — the weather cools, the crowds thin from summer, and the outdoor options stay plentiful through October. Start with the Labor Day Lift Off this weekend, mark the Penrose Apple Festival on the October calendar, and watch rockledgeranch.com for fall programming dates. The aspen season doesn't require any planning at all — just a Saturday afternoon and a willingness to drive up into the mountains.
