October Is the Month to Act on Flu Vaccines for Young Kids

If you have a child under 9 and you haven't scheduled their flu vaccine yet, this week is when it starts to matter. The reason is simple: some children need two doses, and if you wait too long, you run out of time to get both doses on board before flu season hits its stride.

Who Needs Two Doses โ€” and Why the Timing Is Tight

Children between 6 months and 8 years old fall into two groups depending on their vaccination history. If your child is getting the flu vaccine for the first time ever, they need two doses. If they received the flu vaccine last season but only got one dose, they also need two doses this year.

Those two doses must be spaced at least four weeks apart. Flu season typically ramps up in late October and runs through February. If your child is in the two-dose group and you start this week, you're cutting it close โ€” but you can still get both doses on board before the peak window. Wait another two or three weeks, and the math doesn't work anymore.

Children who got two doses last season are in better shape. They and children 9 years and older only need one dose annually.

What the AAP Recommends

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the flu vaccine annually for all children 6 months and older. The recommendation is consistent across years and applies to healthy children, not just those with underlying conditions. The AAP's guidance at healthychildren.org is that the ideal time to vaccinate is by the end of October โ€” which makes this week the right window to act if you haven't already.

This isn't about alarm, it's about timing. The flu vaccine takes about two weeks to reach full effectiveness after each dose. Two-dose kids who start now get their second dose in early November and reach full protection right as flu season activity typically begins climbing in Colorado.

Where Families Can Go in Colorado Springs

Your child's pediatrician is the most straightforward place to start. Most pediatric offices in Colorado Springs do same-week or same-day flu vaccine appointments in October โ€” call early in the week for the best availability.

Pharmacies are another option for children old enough to receive vaccines there. Chain pharmacies including CVS, Walgreens, and King Soopers all offer flu shots, though age eligibility varies by location. Check directly with your preferred pharmacy about whether they vaccinate children and what the minimum age is for their site.

If your child has a school-based health program or if their school runs a flu shot clinic, those can also be efficient options. Several Pikes Peak area school districts have run on-site flu vaccine events in fall โ€” check with your school's health office.

A Few Practical Notes

The flu shot and the nasal spray vaccine (FluMist) are both approved for most children 2 and older. Children under 2 should receive the injectable vaccine. If your child has a history of severe egg allergy or a prior severe reaction to a flu vaccine, talk to your pediatrician before scheduling.

It's also safe โ€” and recommended โ€” to get the flu vaccine at the same appointment as other routine vaccines. If your child has a wellness visit coming up, that's a logical time to add it.

If your family already has flu shots scheduled, you're in good shape. If not, this is a low-lift task that's worth making a call about this week rather than next.

What's Next

The CDC's flu vaccine information and the AAP's guidance for parents are both updated seasonally and available at cdc.gov/flu and healthychildren.org. For current flu activity levels in Colorado, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment tracks flu surveillance at cdphe.colorado.gov. If your child has a complex medical history, their pediatrician can help assess timing and vaccine type.
