Colorado Springs City Council votes Monday, October 27, on the 2026 Park System Master Plan — a document that sets priorities for how COS manages, maintains, and invests in its parks, trails, and recreational spaces over the coming years. If your family uses any of those spaces regularly, this vote affects you.

What the Master Plan Covers

The Parks Advisory Board recommended the 2026 Park System Master Plan to City Council after a review process that included public input earlier this year. Master plans like this one serve as a roadmap for how the parks department allocates resources, prioritizes maintenance, and plans for new amenities.

Colorado Springs operates one of the larger municipal park systems along the Front Range, with hundreds of parks, miles of trails, recreation centers, pools, and open space. The Westside Community Center, Monument Valley Park, Palmer Park, and dozens of neighborhood playgrounds all fall within the parks department's scope. For families with young kids, parks infrastructure is often part of the daily routine — after-school time, weekend activities, sports leagues.

Meadows Park Community Center Also on the Agenda

The Parks Advisory Board also recommended a community-focused future use for the former Meadows Park Community Center. The specific programming and management approach for the site is still being determined, but the recommendation preserves the space for community benefit rather than alternative uses. City Council will consider this recommendation alongside the master plan.

What's Already Happening in COS Parks

Families who use Monument Valley Park should know that a section of the Greenway Trail has been temporarily closed since October 12 as part of ongoing work in the park. The closure is expected to affect some of the trail access along the creek corridor. Memorial Park is also adjusting its gate hours on Sundays — check the COS Parks and Recreation website for current hours before heading out.

How to Get Involved

City Council meetings are open to the public and include a public comment period. The October 27 meeting agenda, along with documents about the master plan, is available at coloradosprings.gov. Colorado Springs families who have opinions about parks funding, trail maintenance, or specific facilities can contact their City Council representative or attend the meeting in person.

What's Next

If the master plan is approved Monday, it becomes the official framework guiding parks decisions for the foreseeable future. The Meadows Park Community Center decision will move into a planning and community engagement phase once City Council acts. COS Parenting will follow up with details on what the approved plan means for specific family-friendly spaces across Colorado Springs.
