Colorado Springs District 20 families: if you had August 13 written on your calendar as the first day of school, erase it. The official start dates for D20 have been updated.

Preschool, kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade students will begin on Monday, August 17. All other D20 students start the following day, Tuesday, August 18.

The correction matters. Showing up on the wrong day — with a child, a backpack, and a lunch — and finding school is not yet in session is a frustrating way to begin the year. Share this with any D20 families who may have the old date.

Why the Staggered Start?

D20's staggered approach — bringing in specific grade levels one day before the full student body — mirrors what District 49 uses as well. The logic is straightforward: new-to-a-building students (incoming kindergartners, middle school students, high school freshmen) get a day to orient themselves, find classrooms, and connect with teachers before the full population arrives. It tends to reduce first-day chaos for everyone.

The Full August Timeline for COS Families

With three major school districts on three different schedules, August in Colorado Springs is a rolling back-to-school season that stretches across most of the month. D49 kicked things off earliest — students were already in classrooms on August 3 and 4. D11 follows on August 12, with more than 14,000 K-8 students receiving free school supply kits in their classrooms that day. D20 is the last of the three major districts to start, with its first full week of classes beginning the week of August 18.

For families with children in different districts, this means back-to-school preparation is a multi-week process rather than a single transition.

What to Do Before D20 First Day

D20 families have until August 17 — more than a week from today. If you have not already done so, this is a good time to review your child's teacher supply list, confirm transportation arrangements, and check your school's specific first-day procedures. D20's website at d20.org has the most current information for each school campus.

What's Next

D20's staggered first days fall on August 17 and 18. In the meantime, D49 families are already a week into the school year, and D11 families prepare for August 12. For D20-specific information, visit d20.org.
