Twenty-three years ago this week, Colorado Springs experienced a blizzard that locals still talk about in awed tones. The March 2003 storm dumped several feet of snow on the Pikes Peak region, shutting down the city for days.

Roads were impassable. Roofs collapsed under the weight. Schools closed for nearly a week. And residents came together in ways that defined the community for years afterward.

"I remember my neighbor using a snowblower for 12 straight hours just to clear our street," recalled one longtime resident. "Nobody asked him to. He just did it."

The storm remains a benchmark for winter weather in Colorado Springs. Meteorologists say a storm of that magnitude is statistically likely to occur once every 25-30 years.
