Two notable developments from Colorado Springs school districts this week — one involving a structural change at District 49, and another that's a straightforward good-news story for D11 families.

D49: BOCES Dissolution and What It Means for Families

The District 49 Board of Education voted on August 17 to dissolve the ERBOCES — the Education ReImagined BOCES partnership — that had been a hub for specialized and online learning. The Colorado State Board of Education affirmed the decision on August 19, clearing the path for D49 to continue serving students independently.

For most D49 families, the practical impact should be minimal. Students currently enrolled in BOCES-authorized online schools will continue to be served — now through a new D49 Student Success Center that will take over as the hub for specialized learning options. The Base49 program, a specialized alternative learning program, is also relocating to the former Falcon Elementary building.

D49 is in week three-plus of the 2026-27 school year, having started classes in early August. The district serves roughly 23,000 students.

If you're a D49 family whose child was in a BOCES-authorized program, the expectation is continuity of services. The district has not signaled any reduction in specialized programming — the administrative structure is changing, not the offerings. Watch for direct communication from D49 for program-specific updates.

D11: Free School Supply Kits Coming to 14,000-Plus Students

District 11 is delivering some welcome back-to-school news. The district has partnered with Edukit to provide free, grade-specific school supply kits to more than 14,000 K-8 students across D11 schools.

D11 started the school year on August 12 and is now wrapping up week two. The Edukit kits are designed for each grade level, so the supplies are matched to what teachers actually need in the classroom — rather than a generic supply list that parents have to hunt down item by item. If your child is enrolled in a D11 K-8 school, kits should be arriving at schools now. Check with your child's teacher or school office if you have questions about delivery timing.

The district serves approximately 25,000 students. For information or questions, visit d11.org.

A Quick Look at Where All Three Districts Are

District School Start Current Week Enrollment
D49 August 3-4 Week 3+ ~23,000
D11 August 12 Week 2 ~25,000
D20 August 17-18 Week 1 ~28,000

D20 families are in week one of the year, following a staggered start that brought kindergarteners, sixth-graders, and ninth-graders in on August 17 and the full student body on August 18. No major district news from D20 this week.

What's Next

D49 families with questions about how the BOCES dissolution affects their child's specific program should monitor communications from D49.org, where the district will post updates as the Student Success Center structure takes shape. D11 families expecting supply kits should look for them to arrive through school this week. For D20 families, week two starts Monday — settle in.
